NZ Health Research: New Pain Relief Tablet For NZ

November 11th, 2009

A new pain killer, which combines paracetamol and the anti-inflammatory ibuprofen for the first time, will be available in NZ chemists this month.

The drug was developed and tested in NZ with help from US scientists. AFT Pharmaceuticals has been working on the drug, called Maxigesic, since 2004. Clinical trials show Maxigesic is significantly more effective than paracetamol alone. The tablets contain 500mg of paracetamol and 150mg of ibuprofen. The drug works to relieve pain and reduce fever and inflammation.

It can be used to treat standard complaints such as head, back and tooth ache. AFT will supply it in NZ and Aust and is looking for a partner to sell the drug overseas. It says the global market for pain relief products is worth something like $27bn. The company says it wants to be the first NZ pharmaceutical company to develop a patented drug to market and license it globally.
